About This Material
Most walls require a double top plate for structural continuity. The second plate (cap plate) overlaps joints in the first plate and ties walls together at corners and intersections.
Installation Tips
- •Offset joints in the cap plate from joints in the first top plate by at least 4 feet.
- •Tie corners together with the cap plate for structural rigidity.
- •Nail cap plate with 16d nails staggered every 16".
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Aligning cap plate joints directly over first plate joints — weakens the wall.
- Not lapping the cap plate at corners.
