About This Material
Wall studs are vertical lumber members that carry the structural load of the wall. Standard sizes are 2x4 for interior walls and 2x6 for exterior walls (better insulation). Pre-cut studs (92 5/8" for 8-ft walls) save time.
Installation Tips
- •Use pre-cut or pre-sorted studs for consistent wall height.
- •Mark stud layout on the plate before framing to keep spacing accurate.
- •Use a pneumatic framing nailer for speed — end nail through plates into studs.
- •Double the top plate for structural continuity over openings.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not adding extra studs at corners and partition intersections.
- Forgetting king studs and jack studs at openings.
- Inconsistent spacing causing sheathing to miss stud edges.
- Using wet or twisted lumber that causes bowed walls.
