About This Material

Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic product that simulates wood, stone, or tile using a photographic image layer under a clear protective wear layer. It is the most affordable hard-surface flooring option, typically costing $1–$5 per square foot for materials. Laminate uses a click-lock installation system that floats over the subfloor without glue or nails, making it one of the easiest DIY flooring projects. Standard laminate plank dimensions are 5–8 inches wide and 36–54 inches long. Thickness ranges from 6mm (budget) to 12mm (premium), with thicker planks providing better sound dampening and feel underfoot. AC ratings measure durability: AC3 is suitable for residential use, AC4 for high-traffic residential or light commercial, and AC5 for commercial applications. Laminate requires a vapor barrier and foam underlayment beneath it — some products have underlayment pre-attached. Expansion gaps of 1/4 to 3/8 inch are mandatory along all walls, under door frames, and at transitions. Water-resistant laminate (WPC or SPC core) is available for kitchens and bathrooms but is not waterproof — standing water will still damage it over time. Professional installation adds $2–$4 per square foot.

Installation Tips

  • Acclimate planks in the room for 48 hours before installation.
  • Install a vapor barrier on concrete subfloors, then foam underlayment on top.
  • Start with the tongue side facing the starting wall, using 1/4-inch spacers.
  • Use a tapping block and pull bar — never hammer directly on the plank edge.
  • Undercut door jambs with a jamb saw rather than cutting planks to fit around them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Installing without underlayment — causes noise, moisture damage, and voids the warranty.
  • Not leaving expansion gaps — laminate expands and contracts with humidity changes.
  • Using the wrong cleaner — never wet-mop laminate or use steam cleaners.
  • Forgetting transitions at doorways — T-molding is required between rooms.
  • Not staggering end joints enough — minimum 6-inch offset between rows.
